Describe the flow of energy and nutrients through the marine ecosystem. And, what are the limiting factors that affect phytoplankton productivity? Discuss the effects of these factors seasonally and geographically.

Explanation / Answer

Phytoplanktons are living organisms that can undergo photosynthesis. They are called as autotrophs because they will use the sunlight to make their own food.

The organisms that cannot prepare their own food will depend on the autotrophs. The energy from the sun will be transferred to the autotrophs like phytoplanktons and they are consumed by the other organisms. When they are dead the energy will be mixed into the system by the help of these decomposers. They again take the energy to the phytoplanktons.

The presence of minerals and sunlight and pollution are affecting the productivity of the phytoplanktons.

When the temperature and the summer comes out, the rate of photosynthesis will increase and the availability of the minerals will change. With this the growth and the productivity of the phytoplanktons will change.

Based on the geographic setting also the growth and the sustainability of the phytoplanktons will change

When the phytoplanktons are in hot climate they boom good and productivity will be high.
