Explanation / Answer
Liberty is the freedom to perform any legitimate activities without any restriction of oppressive nature and that does not cause harm to other individuals in the society. It is the soul of any constitution developed by any sovereign state or country as it defines the independence in true sense. It gives people the freedom of expression, right to choose and right to perform religious activities among the others. One of the prime examples is freedom of expression. Under this type of liberty, people can criticize any government policy in constructive ways, people can write to demonstrate our views and they can also conduct peaceful movement to bring in the change in the existing system.
Liberty is important for the peaceful and progressive coexistence of society and government institutions following political philosophy. It helps them to correct each other and grow. Liberty helps citizens to choose the government through electoral rights. In response, the government makes suitable policies for the development of state / nation such as employment, price stability, prosperity and good relations with neighboring states. Thus, citizens gain the collective power to choose, change and exercise their rights. Though, they have to go with the majority under liberty and follow what is good for the majority of the people in the state.
Liberty also demands personal responsibility to protect it. It demands not to the exercise it for oneself only, but also it causes to protect the liberty of others so that mutual respect for the liberty of each other is maintained. Also, it is the responsibility for the sensible use of liberty as any wrongful choice in electing government can lead to banish the liberty for everyone. Thus, for the sake of liberty, citizens should not misuse it. On a similar note, one citizen should also respect other citizen’s religious values and facilitate them. But, one citizen should also report the wrongdoing of any other citizen under the coverage of liberty.
Yes, it can be said that Americans have gained/maintained liberty. Though, a lot of work needs to be done to realize the dream of the founding fathers. USA boasts of diversity on the basis of race, class and ethnicity among other aspects. But, all the citizens don’t get the uniform level of liberty in true sense. Economic disparity, education divide and discrimination in the justice system, don’t help the cause also. Though, many acts and laws have been passed to bridge the gap, but more efforts are needed to realize the dream of founding fathers mentioned in the constitutions.
