Question

Why is there a pyramid on the dollar bill? You’ll have to do a little investigating to answer this one. Feel free to name other remnants of Mesopotamian or Egyptian culture you see in contemporary culture. This idea of how these ancient cultures continued their influence or represented ideas long after they were gone are ideas we will be looking for throughout our course.

What are the cultural and historical “legacies” of Egypt and Mesopotamian culture for Western heritage?

“ Hammurabi’s Code” and the “Negative Confessions” are both examples of moral codes. In what ways are they similar or different to your own moral codes? Which ones sound ancient and which sound like a law or rule we might have today?

Explanation / Answer

The pyramid and eye didn’t show up on the dollar bill until 1935 . Then it became a part of great seal and FDR(Franklin Delano Roosevelt) added it to the dollar and It was taken from ancient Egyptian documents. The pyramid is a symbol of solidity and eternity, something that lasts forever. It has 13 levels, one for each of the 13 colonies that made up the first 13 states of the USA. The pyramid is unfinished indicating that the nation is unfinished. There is still work to be done. The rest of pyramid shows the eye which represents, a very vague sense, the eye of “divine providence” . The words Novus Ordo Seclorum is a Latin work which mean "a new order for the ages."

In fact, the stuff was just made up, but it led to the widespread impression that Egypt was the birthplace of all kinds of European Enlightenment ideas, conveyed through “secret knowledge” shared only with other Masons.

The legacies of ancient Egypt are :They constructed some of the world's largest monuments without modern technology which influenced the modern architecture and art , They made advances in astrology, astronomy, science and medicine but the culture of the Egyptians is full of mystery and intrigue

For about 30 centuries Egypt remained as the foremost nation in the Mediterranean world. When the arrival of Alexander the Great in 332BC It ended the Egyptian way of life
The unique culture was quickly buried beneath successive layers of Greek, Roman and Arabic tradition, and all knowledge of Egypt's glorious past was lost. Only the decaying stone monuments, their hieroglyphic texts now unreadable, shows the culture of Egypt or the idea of ancient Egypt

Hammurabi's code is the punishment for those who committed a crime but the negative confession for those who hadn't committed a crime and promise not to commit crime and it focus on one indiviual

The similarities are it seen they both are written from religious influence and both focus on law and order and both are a guide for life

Hammurabi's is ancient and negative confession is like a law
