Question
Form of physical activity that is designed to improve muscular fitness by exercising a muscle or a muscle group against external resistance” (American College of Sports Medicine). Some of the physiological advantages of strength training
Explay why is that do of each one of these?
(1) increases lean weight and reduces fat weight;
(2) increases metabolic rate;
(3) enhances physical performance, movement control, walking speed, and functional independence;
(4) improve cognitive abilities;
(5) supports the prevention and management of certain diseases;
(6) improves cardiovascular;
(7) increases bone mineral density;
(8) reduces low back pain;
(9) eases discomfort related to arthritis and fibromyalgia; and
(10) reverses certain aging factors in the skeletal muscle
Explanation / Answer
Resistance training is of paramount importance.
(1) With age we tend to lose lean muscle mass (sarcopenia) , resistance training helps in combatting loss of lean muscle mass thereby keeping the muscles fit.
(2) Ageing reduces resting metabolic rate(RMR) due to the decline in fat free mass(FFM), strength training elicits an increase in FFM, resulting in increased metabolism.
(3) Due to the increase in lean muscle mass and resting metabolic rate, physical performance, movement control, walking speed, and functional independence get enhanced.
(4) There exists a positive causal link between muscle adaptations to increased resistance training and the improved functioning of brain.
(5) In the cases of metabolic disease and orthopedic conditions, the beneficial effects of resistance trraining have been well documented. In cases of cardiovascular disease and neurological disorders there are certain benefits for some conditions but more studies are required.
(6) For cardiovascular disease, RT has an impact on hypertension; arterial stiffness, and chronic heart failure but there exists a debate over the exercise prescription. Hypertension gets relieved in most of the case but there is a negative effect on the arterial stiffness. In case of chronic heart failure functional measures of health do improve, but there is debate over the exercise prescription.
(7) Resistance training significantly raises the BMD with a recent evidence-based review that supported the efficacy of RT as treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee, though the authors called for more (higher quality) research on other joints, such as the hip.
(8) An inhibited muscle generally does not respond to such training.
(9) Resistance training maintains the strength of the muscles around affected joints, and it also lubricates joints, thereby reducing bone loss easing discomfort related to arthritis and fibromyalgia.
(10) As resistance training helps in combatting loss of lean muscle mass thereby keeping the muscles fit, it may reverse certain aging factors in the skeletal muscle.
