The article attached by Caitlyn Davey brings up an excellent point about women’s non-verbal communication in the workplace. In a still male dominated business world, it is difficult for women to stand out and look strong without coming across mean. In my experience, women are either interpreted as weak and shy or strong and irrational. Certain actions that women do are never interpreted the same when a man does them, and this causes a large issue in the workplace. Women are not always taken as seriously as they should be and it is difficult to overcome. Davey’s article lists a few good ways to help women look stronger without the negative reactions.
Davey focuses on body language in the article. The big points include standing up straight and not sinking into a chair, keeping your shoulders down and neck straight, and keeping body language open (not crossing your arms). These non-verbal types of communication make a woman look stronger but not closed off. Seeming closed off is a quick way to tell someone you are not willing to hear their opinion, and this causes issues in the workplace, since it is usually not true.
In my experience in the workplace, women’s actions (more often than men’s), are interpreted incorrectly. Most of the time we feel the way our body language portrays. I thought Davey’s article was very good in pointing out what to do to portray yourself in a more positive light and not seem closed off to co-workers. Women deserve to be more dominate in the workplace, but this will not happen if all people do not become more aware of their body language. Simply understanding what forms of body language you use can help you to portray yourself in a way that truly reflects who you are.
What other forms of body language can be used to make you look strong rather than shy? How can women be strong in the workplace without being unintentionally being interpreted as mean?
according to the above article write at least two clearly and carefully composes paragraphs value-Added comment and answer questions.
PLEASE NOTE: Value-added comments. Each vac will contain at least two clearly and carefully composed paragraphs that respond directly to an oe or vac. Please refer to the table on page 10 to determine the modules for which you are required to post your vacs and the corresponding duedates. A vac will be scored according to its relevance and its insightfulness. To earn credit, a vac must live up to its name by truly adding value. You will receive fewer than four points if you dash off a vapid response that adds no value to the discussion. Therefore, do not merely paraphrase or state that you agree/disagree with a post/posts or empathize with the poster(s); instead, respond to the poster(s) in a way that enhances the discussion. Your response may also indicate the relevance of the previous post(s) to other course concepts and may include a question of your own. You may post your vac in response to an oe for that module or in response to someone else’s vac about an oe for that module. If you are not the first person to post a vac in response to an oe, be sure to read all other vac(s) posted for that oe to ensure that you are synthesizing, rather than rehashing, what has already been stated. (As the Talking Heads observed in Psycho Killer, “say something once; why say it again?”) Please note that although it is appropriate for you to state your disagreement with someone else’s opinions, you must take care to do so in a respectful way.
Explanation / Answer
Body language is a great way to assert control and communicate strength and power. In the modern business world, women need to look strong rather than shy. This could be done by adopting relevant body language. It’s at the core of how others perceive an individual and how one perceive herself. If a woman adopts confident and elegant body language, people around her will see her as “confident” and “elegant”, regardless of how she may be feeling inside. And by picking up their reactions and vibes, she will see that others are treating her as a confident person and this will make her believe that she is a confident, elegant and powerful woman. Following are the various forms of body language that can be used to make a woman look strong rather than shy:
Carrying One Item: It is believed that people who carry more than one item, like a purse and a briefcase or a briefcase and a coat are perceived to be less organized and more forgetful. So, before going into a meeting or event a woman should consolidate her belongings.
Steeple: Steepling is when someone brings their hands up in front of their chest and presses the tips of their fingers together. This is a gesture of confidence and self-assuredness. This can easily be done to inspire confidence in oneself and others before or during a meeting or event.
Pointing the Feet: The feet serves as a direct reflection of a person’s attitude. When the feet are pointed directly toward another person, this is a sign of genuine interest. If, on the other hand, the feet are pointed away or towards the exit, this means that person is thinking about leaving and not more interested.
Claim Your Territory: When women want to be assertive they can stand with their feet spread further apart. This ‘claiming of territory’ is a subconscious cue to men that they are feeling confident. When women are nervous, they tend to take up as little space as possible — crossing their legs and tucking their arms into the chair or folding them over their chest, but this looks weak.
Women could be strong in the workplace without being unintentionally being interpreted as mean. They must simultaneously present themselves as self-confident and dominant while tempering these qualities with displays of communal characteristics.Women should deploy their strong interpersonal and communication skills at every opportunity and tout their accomplishments in this realm. They should build strong network to promote their career. They should cultivate and project confidence and self-promote themselves. Incubating of talents is also essential.
