4. What caused the Great Depression and explain why Hoover’s efforts to manage the Depression failed. Why did Hoover become so unpopular, and what were the faces of the depression? How could you characterize the experience of the women in breadlines in Minnesota?

5. What was the Cold War in terms of its ideas and policies? What was the nature of McCarthyism and why was the Soviet Union considered such a threat? How did Americans, both in public government and private life, attempt to stop this communist threat?

Answer 1) The progressive movements were the efforts to cure many ills of American society that had developed during the industrial growth of the last quarter of the 19th century.The frontier had been tamed, great cities and businesses developed, and an overseas empire established. this was not new in america to make effort to improve the society this was being done for many times. This included efforts of social activists to reform working conditions and humanize the treatment of mentally ill people and prisoners after civil war. The second reform era began during Reconstruction and lasted until the American entry intoWorld War I. The struggle for women`s rights and thetemperance movement were the initial issues addressed. A farm movement also emerged to compensate for the declining importance of rural areas in an increasingly urbanized America.

All these were actually social reforms not control.
