Question
what is the discussion reply for this topic? The term racism gets thrown around a lot. Me personally I don’t care for the word to much but when I hear it I think of prejudice or discrimination against another person or group. Since we grow up with a certain mindset and learning about black history or about the Native American, we are only to think of it as one way unless educated otherwise. As stated in our reading, “If we live in an environment in which we are bombarded with stereotypical images in the media, are frequently exposed to the ethnic jokes of friends and family members, and are rarely informed of the accomplishments of oppressed groups, we will develop the negative categorizations of those groups that form the basis of prejudice” (Tatum, 1997). This section of the reading is a perfect explanation of how we see the world now. With personal experiences with even my own family, racism is very active among all groups of people. I am half white and half Mexican. My best friend growing up was half Mexican and half black. I remember one time my mom asking me if my friend was black and I responded by saying “no, she’s light brown.” I did not see color at all but only who the person actually was. My cousins, who were racist, would talk mean about Mexicans and being half Mexican I would ask them “so you only like half of me?” and they would joke it off. So, I still don’t understand why people have to bring up the color of ones’ skin to determine what type of person they are mentally. Unfortunately, that’s the type of world we live in and we can only educate ourselves and grow for it one day.
Explanation / Answer
Racism is one belief his/her genetically physical characteristics is better than the characteristics of the another race. It is a concept which is relevant to us from the days of slavery. Black people have faced numerous number of attacks, violence because of their skin color. All lives do matter. It does not matter which race, sex, religion, sexual orientation you have. The only thing that we all share is humanity. So we should not get divided on the basis of these. We should all protest if there is any right violation against anyone. That's what makes us human. Thus, to serve humanity, all lives must matter; nobody has the right to discriminate anyone. We can say, as a nation or as a human, we must unite rather than breaking away. That's what makes us different from animal, we are social animal and we should care for each other. Now, coming back to the races, black people are human too. They are discriminated financially, socially and they are sometimes harassed by the police. So as all lives matter we should fight so that they do not get discriminated.
Black Lives Matter (BLM): It is an international activist movement started by the African American community. They mainly campaigns against the violence and systemic racism towards black people. One may argue that the name (Black Lives Matter) itself is racist, as they think it tries to imply only black lives matter and others do not. But the movement actually does not mean it aims to discriminate against non-black people. The movement tries to convey the message that black people who are persecuted even at the present time for no reason are innocent and that must be stopped.
