1. List and then briefly describe two different processes that occur during the sexual life cycle that increase the genetic diversity of offspring.2. Ordinary cell division produces two daughter cells that are genetically identical. How is mitosis useful in any organism?
3. Which two phases of mitosis are essentially opposites in terms of changes in the nucleus? Explain your choice.
4. What are four characteristics (behaviors) of all cancer cells?
5. We commonly believe that benign tumors are not harmful. Is this true or false? Explain why you made that decision.
Explanation / Answer
1.) Crossing Over- chromosomes from parent cells and daughter cells are completely different. 2.) Mitosis is useful in organisms because this is the process in which the chromosomes are divided amongst the two daughter cells. 3.)Prophase and Telophase because Prophase is at the beginning of Mitosis and Telophase occurs during the end of Mitosis. 4.) Cancer cells cause blood vessels to grow into the tumor in which they are forming in order to keep it alive. When cells are cancerous they are unable to control the rate at which they multiply. The cancerous cells look like the cells they multiplied from. Normal Healthy cells latch onto one another while cancerous cells do not. 5.) Benign tumors can be truly fatal if not treated right away. The reason Benign tumors are known to be less harmful is because they do not spread throughout the body. Once the tumor is removed it is gone for good.
