Racism is based on the outlook on how you define the word; however, racism in the 21st century is better defined as prejudice because anytime something violent happens people often relate it to their race. The United States is home to many cultures and races. Racism is a big issue in today’s modern society. Racism is based on your foundation. People often seen racism as prejudice and hate towards someone.

I was raised in a white middle class family and never knew anything about racism until I was in middle school. All I knew is that people are people no matter what their skin color is. One day I was at my soccer game and we had just beat a team. After every game, we go and shake hands with the other team and say good game. After we shook their hands I had a group of girls come up to me and say, “I bet if you weren’t white you wouldn’t get as much playing time on the field.” Just like Tatum said, People of color can be racist too.” (Tatum, 109) I was so confused. I didn’t understand what the color of my skin had to do with my playing time. I was in shock. It showed me what racism was. Just because I was white, people automatically think that’s why I got more playing time? I earned my spot on that team. I most defiantly earned my playing time on the field. After figuring out what those girls meant by saying their comment to me, I was angry. I spent countless hours and time at practice. I put all my effort into soccer. On my team, you had to earn your playing time. It wasn’t just given to you. As defined by Oxford dictionary, “Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.” Those girls showed me how racism is looked upon. They showed me racism is hate and prejudice. In conclusion, I think the 21st century racism is prejudice and not looked at in a good way.

Explanation / Answer

Racism: the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

Prejudice: preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Some people simplify racism as one group not liking another, and think "racist" and "prejudiced" are interchangeable. But racism is a concept that operates on both an individual and institutional level. The actual meaning of “racism” got mixed up with other aspects of racism prejudice, bigotry, ignorance, and so on. At its core, racism is a system in which a dominant race benefits off the oppression of others, whether they want to or not.

In The United States non-whites tend to see racial discrimination a lot more than whites do. An overwhelming 87% of black Americans say black people face a lot of discrimination in the United States, but only 49% of white Americans say the same thing, according to a poll from the Public Religion Research Institute.

As discussed in the case white people can experience prejudice from black people and other non-whites. Black people can have ignorant, backwards ideas about white people, as well as other non-white races. But racism is far more complex. Though white people face issues as discussed in the case, it is far less serious than the issues faced by black people or other non-whites living in the country. They do not face housing or job discrimination, police brutality, poverty, or incarceration at the level that black people do. This is not to say that they do not experience things like poverty and police brutality at all. But not on the same scale. That is the reality of racism.

People aren't born with prejudices about race. It isn't something that is encoded in the DNA. It's based on perception. It's something observed and learned over time through repetition in all forms of media, in conversations, in dialogues, in the way that we interact socially in their daily lives.

As said in the definition Prejudice is preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. In the case here the person has faced prejudice (not as serious and complex as racism). These prejudices are something that are learned, which means that it be can unlearned as well.
