Question

The patient has changed his eating habits over the past 6 months. He started to control the amount of calories he consumed and kept it below 3000 kcal/day. He got a membership at the local gym, but due to his busy schedule he wasn’t been able to spend time working out “maybe goes once a week”. Four weeks ago he started a “fad diet” to help him lose more weight. He is 26 years old now, his blood pressure is 125/76, he weighs 200lb, he is 5'9" and his waist circumference is 40in. He recorded what he ate during the last 2 weeks and these are the results: 2700 kcal/day (total daily intake), 1000 kcal from lipids, 1200 kcal from protein and 500 kcal from carbohydrates. Which “fad diet” do you think he is currently on?

Explanation / Answer

Fad diet is a kind of diet used for quick weight loss which is unhealthy and unusual and unbalanced diet.It is targeted by people who want lo lose weight quickly.

As per the result it clearly shows that lipid and protein intake is more when compared to carbohydrates which is less.Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids are macronutrients that provide the body with calories.Protein is found in meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds etc.Lipid or fat is mostly due to intake of butter, cheese, cream, fried foods, baked foods, meat etc.Carbohydrates is due to intake of rice, starch foods, vegetables, grains etc

According to the patients results ,it clearly indicates that he is on ATKINS FAD DIET which mostly restricts carbohydrates.
