Question

2. Choose ONE correct statement below about ABO incompatibility in whole blood transfusion that is causing intra vascular or extra vascular hemolysis. Please explain. A) "Antigen (agglutinogen) in the recipient is reacting with the antibody (-agglutinin) from the donor" B)"Antibody (-agglutinin) in the recipient is reacting with the antigen (-agglutinogen) from the donor" C)"Antibody (-agglutinin) and Antigen (agglutinogen) from the recipient are reacting with the antigen & antibody from the donor" acBook Air

Explanation / Answer

B is the correct that is antibody in the recipient is reacting with the antigen from the donor.

For example type A blood group has A antigen and and anti B antibody while type B blood group has B antigen and anti B antibody. When A type has transferred to type B blood group, the anti A antibody reacts with A antigen and forms a clot and that leads to intra or extra vascular hemolysis. The antigen and antibody reaction needs activation of Complement system in the body. So that makes option A and C incorrect.
