11-3Thinking It Through

Peta Fry works as a respiratory therapist at a busy medical center. This particular day is busier than usual and it seems no matter how quickly Peta works, she cannot get her assignments done to keep on schedule. It is important for Peta to finish on time because she has a friend picking her up in front of the hospital right after work to go out for dinner. While working with Mrs. Homer, a bottle of water is accidentally tipped over because the patient did not see it due to her poor vision. Peta makes a mental note to call housekeeping when she finishes, so they can clean up the spill. When she finishes with Mrs. Homer, Peta realizes that she is going to be late and is afraid her friend will be upset. In an effort to save time, she decides not to change into the street clothes she brought with her to work and runs as quickly as she can to meet her friend.

Identify at least three behaviors of Peta that jeopardize environmental safety. What are the possible consequences of these unsafe behaviors?

What health care considerations could Peta have followed when working with the patient with impaired vision that may have prevented the bottle of water from spilling?

Explanation / Answer

Peta Fry is a respiratory therapist , she was in hurry that day as she has to meet her friend for dinner ,in this case

I) she has to complete many activities around the patient in short time which can make her anxious and disturbed and this will result in poor concentration to the work.

To overcome this she can prioritize the activities which can save her time and she can complete her assignment in given time. She has to be calm as it gives sense of security to the patient.

II) Peta calls the housekeeping wokers after finishing her work. This is not the proper action , she has to make the call earlier as spillage from bottle can cause physiological threat to the patient.

she has to make thorough physical examination of the patient. And as a nurse she should be a critical thinker.she has to follow and ensure aseptic techniques to prevent nosocomial infection. She has to enure physical safety to the patient by offering orientation to unit, and clear explanation about unfamiliar activities, equipments, procedures and investigations.

III) Peta went to meet her friend without changing her clothes as she was getting late.As peta is working in respiratory unit, and respiratory illness are spread quickly by direct contact or droplet infection . Peta doesnt change the hospital cloth, her clothes may get infected with the micro organisms and this behavior can lead in putting environmental safety in danger.

The health care environment should be therapeutic . The health care personnel should consider the following factors essential to the well being:

As patient has impaired vision so nurse should consider the following thoughtful action.

Hospital negligence in physical, sociocultural and safety factors can cause a potential threat of nosocomial infection. So therapeutic environment isa great and emergency need in hospital or community.Professional nurses can play important role in this way by saying prevention is better than cure.
