Spectrophotometry is one of the analytical procedures in biochemistry. It is commonly used to identify the small quantities of materials in a solution. Spectrophotometry allows researchers to understand the contents of organic and inorganic compounds with the help of ultraviolet light and visible rays of light that can be seen with the human eye.
a) Spectrophotometry provides an efficient tool to understand the level of bilirubin, hemoglobin and glucose in the serum of blood. It can analyse conditions related to variations in levels of bilirubin, hemoglobin and glucose. These three tests determines the basic for many illness like liver diseases, anemia, endocrinal illness like diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus. Therefore, it can detect other conditions because of the basic tests.
b) Yes, there is a condition known as Auto-brewery syndrome, where a person with home brewer of beer with regular exposure to the yeast namely Saccharomyces cerevisiae which ferment beer.
Treating patients with this syndrome is very crucial. The following measures should be undertaken;
- Avoiding meals with high carbohydrate contents as it may trigger the increase in ethanol level
- Administration of probiotics can help the retention of good bacteria in gut
- Anti fungal to curb the yeast growth is essential. However, this not only kill the yeast but also the good bacteria in gut which can result in sudden outburst of yeast growth
- Abstinence from alcohol and maintaining low glycemic index is the thumb rule for treating patients with such syndrome
- Analysing the patient's ethanol level and breathanalyser to get the baseline data for further management
C) BAC stands for Blood Alcohol concentration. This BAC is calculated which depends on the gender and weight of the person. And from the given table , the person must have consumed 4 to 5 drinks of beer.
