It is a general feeling that major metropolis hosting and promoting professional sports will spur economic growth and development of the economy. Though research findings conducted in pre and post liberalization era has found no major correlation between promotion of professional sports and economic growth in terms of increase in real income and prosperity.

Thus, it is more of an emotional / entertainment decision to promote professional sports rather a pure economic decision.
