Population

Discuss your study population. The study population is the larger picture of the research. If you were conducting research focused on childhood education, your study population would include children who are in school. This may be at a local level, state level, national level, or even at the global level. You determine the study population by how big you want the scope of your project to be. This section requires two paragraphs in length.

Explanation / Answer

A population, also known as research population are large number of individuals or objects that is a main focus of research study or research question. It is not possible for researcher to study or conduct test on each and every individual in the population, as it will be too expensive and time consuming.

The researcher uses sampling techniques to identify a certain study population for the research. A study population is a collection of well-defined individuals or objects which have similar or common characteristics. The description of the population sample and characteristics are same for all the members.

For e.g. for a research focused on childhood education, the study population will be children who are in school. The sample characteristics may be further defined as children who among age group 10-15 years studying in public schools. In this case the study population is narrowed down to comparatively small population having common characteristics (that are age group and type of education institute).

The sample or study population is a subset of population, it is representative of the population from which it is drawn. The sample size must be such that the statistical analysis can be drawn.

The main purpose of study population is to allow the researchers to conduct study in individuals from population so that the result of the study can be used to derive generalised conclusions for the entire population

There are two type of population research.

Target population: refers to entire group of individuals which a researcher is interested in generalising conclusions of the research.

Accessible population: Refers to those population in the research to which the conclusions of study can be applied. This subset of target population is also known as Study population.
