Healthcare disparities are the unique differences in health status that we see from individual to individual and from group to group. Different groups have different rates of disease and death depending on a number of characteristics—race, sexual orientation, geography, etc. Explore healthcare disparities in the U.S. and determine one group of people likely to experience discrimination in healthcare services.

Identify one policy that encourages healthcare disparities. Explain how it encourages disparities.

Recommend at least one policy that could help to reduce or eliminate healthcare disparities in that population. Please justify your answer with data and examples.

Health Disparities means specific differences in the population by the presence of diseases, health outcomes, access to health services, and quality of care that exist in the racial and ethnic groups. Many factors associated with disparities of the ethnic and racial group eg. living in poor environmental condition, polluted air, inability to access healthy foods etc.

Policymakers address to these issues aimed at eliminating health disparities. But the income, access to care, and health insurance remains the disparities. some of the examples of disparities in racial and ethnic groups are

Health Disparities and Affordable Care Act

Federal health reform has signed in March 2010, to improve quality of care, increases access to care, increases workforce on healthcare, and health coverage for all in order to reduce health disparities. The ACA has mainly focused on laws that promote the private insurance plans in the preventive services and deductibles to eliminate cost barriers.

The ACA provides funding for maternal health, infant and early childhood programs around $1.5 billion. Each state has to identify the risk communities to receive the funds. The ACA also supports the home visiting program to improve health literacy and health outcomes.

Reducing Healthcare Disparities

  The Institute of Medicine(IOM) found the differences in the healthcare of racial and ethnic groups of minorities and non-minorities. So the American Medical Association(AMA) increases the number of minority physicians and enacted policies with the goal of reducing disparities in healthcare. AMA policies with the aim of:
