Question
So my classmates are getting -4240 on A and 4240 on B. Im am getting completely different answers. Any ideas?
The diagram shows a closed triangular prism situated in a region of uniform electric field The dimensions of the triangular prism are a = 18.0 cm, b = 10.0 cm, and d = 34.4 cm. Note that the diagram is not to scale. (a) What is the flux through the bottom face of the triangular prism? What is the direction of the normal for the bottom face of the triangular prism? How is the flux through a face related to it (b) What is the flux through the slanted face of the triangular prism? What is the direction of the normal for the slanted face of the triangular prism? How is the flux through a face related to it So my classmates are getting -4240 on A and 4240 on B. Im am getting completely different answers. Any ideas?Explanation / Answer
Note that
flux = E A sin (B) [as it enters the volume. it is negative]
Thus, as A = L W = a d , B = 90 degrees,
flux = -4235 N *m^2 /C [ANSWER, PART A]
*************
Note that the volume does not enclose any charge. Thus, the sum of fluxes is 0. Thus it must be that
flux = 4235 N*m^2/ C [ANSWER, PART B]
so that the sum of fluxes is 0.
