Question
A 20 kg projectile is fired from the origin with inital velocity v = 40 m.s x + 69.3 m/s y.
At the highest point of its trajectory, the projectile exploads into two fragment of mass 12 kg and 8 kg.
During the brief explosion, the 8 kg fragment experiences an impulse J = 554 kgm/s x + 320 kgm/s y ( and the 12 kg fragment experiences an equal but opposite impulse). At what x coordinate does each fragment land if the terrain is level. Please use subscript A (at launch), B ( just before exploading), C (just after exploading), D(at landing).
Please I request that you tell me which formulas you used to solve everything step by step.
Explanation / Answer
v = u + a t
t = v - u / a
t = 0- 69.3 / -9.81 =7.06 s
I = m v , I / m = v
320 / 12 = 80/3
320 / 8 = 40 m/s
Lets assume the time taken to reach max height and return to the origin level is the same
d = s t
d = (80/3 ) x 14.12 = 376.53 m
d = 40 x 14.12 = 564.8 m
