Question

3. The curves in the Figure below show expiratory airflow during forced expiration in a healthy person and in a patient with COPD (also a third curve of a patient with fibrosis). Each subject first inspired maximally (not shown) and then expired forcibly. The curves show the expiratory flow rates and lung volumes during forced expiration. Where applicable, show your math. What is the value for Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) in the What is the value for peak expiratory flow rate in the What is the value for residual volume in the healthy person healthy person and the patient with COPD? healthy person and the patient with COPD? and the patient with COPD? 2 Normal Obstructive Restrictive LUNG voLUME (I) Expiratory Flow Rate during forced expiration in healthy people and in patients with COPD or with fibrosis

Explanation / Answer

FORCED VITAL CAPACITY:- It is defined as the amount of air can be exhaled during a forced breath.

the normal value of FCV is 25 - 75 % L/s it may vary depending upon the age , sex, and height.

the value of FCV in COPD patients is less than 88% in men and in less than 89% in women.

PEAK EXPIRATORY FLOW RATE:-maximum speed of expiration is called peak expiratory flow rate.

The normal value of the peak expiratory flow is 380 - 420 L/min in women where as iin male 480 to 540 L/min

the peak expiratory flow rate in copd patients by using spirometer device is 110.5+_ 35.69

RESIDUAL VOLUME:- the amount of air retained in the lungs after a forcible expiration is called resdual volume .

the normal value of residual volume is 1.2L in males and 1.1L in females where as in copd patient the residual volume increases
