Question

(a) Find the resistance R1.
k?

(b) Find the resistance R2.
k?

(c) Find the resistance R3.
k?

A battery with (a) Find the resistance R1. k? (b) Find the resistance R2. k? (c) Find the resistance R3. k? = 4.50 V and no internal resistance supplies current to the circuit shown in the figure below. When the double-throw switch S is open as shown in the figure, the current in the battery is 1.00 mA. When the switch is closed in position a, the current in the battery is 1.22 mA. When the switch is closed in position b, the current in the battery is2.12 mA.

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

E = 4.5 V

WHen switch is open

I = E/(R1 + R2 + R3)

R1 + R2 + R3 = 4.5   ----(1)

Now , for switch in position a)

for two R2 in parallel,

Rp = R2/2

I = E/(R1 + 0.5R2 + R3)

(R1 + 0.5R2 + R3 = 4.5/1.22   ----(2)

For switch in position b)

R3 is short circuit ,

I = E/(R1 + R2)

R1 + R2 = 4.5/2.12      -----(3)

solving 1 , 2, 3

R1 = 0.5 Kohm

R2 = 1.623 K ohm

R3 = 2.38 Kohm

the resistances are 0.5 K , 1.623 K , 2.38 K
