Question

Electrician Larry B. Overholt weighs 469 Newtons. His brother, electrician Gary B. Overholt weighs 800 Newtons. They are 3.8 m apart.

A.) Determine the gravitational force between the two electricians. (include units with answer)

B.) If each electrician had the same charge, one positive and one negative, determine the magnitude of the charge so that the electrical attraction force is the same as the gravitational force. (include units with answer)

I will rate, please just show work with solutions so i can understand.

Explanation / Answer

Given that

Weigh of Larry = 469 N, so mass will be = M = 469/9.81 = 47.81 Kg

Weight of Gary = 800 N, so mass will be = m = 800/9.8 = 81.54

Dist between them = r = 3.8m

(A)gravitational force between the two electricians will be given by

F(grav.) = GMm / r2

Where G = 6.637 x 10-11(m/kg)2

F(grav) = 6.637 x 10-11 x 47.81 x 81.54 / (3.8)2 = 1791.8 x 10-11 Newtons

Part (B) Let Q be the charge, As per this part, electrical attraction force is the same as the gravitational force, So

F(grav) = F(elect)

GMm/r2 = K Q2 /r2 which gives us, Q = sqrt (GMm/K)

Q = sqrt[6.637 x 10-11 x 47.81 x 81.54 / 8.99 x 109 ] = sqrt [ 2878.07 x 10-20]

Q = 59.64 x 10-10 C and the other one will have same charge with - sign.(as per the ques)
