Question
(a) Determine the length of time it will take an alpha particle to move halfway around a complete circle.
in s
(b) Does the time found in part (a) increase, decrease, or stay the same, if the speed of the alpha particle is tripled? stay the same
Explanation / Answer
When a charged particle enetrs into uniform magnetic field, it moves in a ciruclar motion. so
m v^2 / r = B q v
radius of the circle is
r = m v / B q
= (6.64*10^ -27 kg ) (3.8*10^ 5 m/s) / (0.174 T)(1.6*10^ -19 C)
=0.09 m
Time taken to complete on revolution is
T = 2 pi r / v
= 2 pi ( 0.09 m ) / ( 3.8*10^ 5 m/s)
=1.5*10^-6 s
Time taken for half circle is 7.44*10^ -7 s
b)
From the above fromula time period is inversely proportional to the speed of the particle and directly proportional to the radius of the circle . so time remains same when the speed increases.
c)
When a charged particle enetrs into uniform magnetic field, it moves in a ciruclar motion. so
m v^2 / r = B q v
radius of the circle is
r = m v / B q
= (6.64*10^ -27 kg ) (1.1*10^ 6 m/s) / (0.174 T)(1.6*10^ -19 C)
=0.262m
Time taken to complete on revolution is
T = 2 pi r / v
= 2 pi ( 0.262 m ) / ( 1.1*10^ 5 m/s)
=1.48*10^-6 s
Time taken for half circle is 7.44*10^ -7 s
