a)

let the distance of object = do

distance of image = di

focal length = f = -3.90 cm

it is given that do - di = 8.50 cm

so             di = do - 8.5    

using the lens equation ::

1/f = 1/do + 1/di

1/(-3.90 cm) = 1/do + 1/(do - 8.5)                             ( since di = do - 8.5 )

do = 6.12 cm

b) it is given that

di = do - 8.5

di = 6.12 - 8.5 = -2.38 cm
