Question

Problem 28.80

A circular loop has radius R and carries current I2 in a clockwise direction (the figure (Figure 1) ). The center of the loop is a distance D above a long, straight wire.

Part A

What is the magnitude of the current I1 in the wire if the magnetic field at the center of the loop is zero?

Express your answer in terms of the variables I2, R, D, and appropriate constants (?0 and ?).

Part B

What is the direction of the current I1?

Explanation / Answer

Magnetic field due to circular current at the centre of loop ,

B_loop = u*I2 / 2R

direction of this field is into the page .

Magnetic field due to wire at distance D is given by

B_wire = u*I1 / 2 *pi*D

sum of B_loop and B_wire have to be zero.

so direction of B_wire will be out of the page .

so , Current in Wire will be towards right . .........Ans (B)

for magnitude
B_loop = B_wire

u*I2 / 2R = u*I1 / 2pi*D

I1 = pi*I2*D / R ..........Ans(a)
