Question

1) The drug sufentanil HCl is administered by infusion at a rate of 2.5 mg/kg/min for anesthesia. If a total of 0.75 mg of the drug is to be administered to a 185-lb patient, how long should the duration of the infusion be?

2) A patient is to receive 2 micrograms/kg/min of nitroglycerin from a solution containing 100 mg of the drug in 500 ml of D5W. If the patient weighs 154 lb and the infusion set delivers 60 gtt/ml,

How many milligrams of nitroglycerin would be delivered per hour?

How many drops per min would be delivered?

3) A heparin drip (IV) has been ordered that contains 10,000 units of heparin in 1000ml of D5W. The drip is set to run at 50 ml/hr. How many units of heparin does the patient receive in 24 hrs?

4) A pharmacist receives a medication order for 1.5 g of Ancef® in 100 ml of D5W. Vials containing 1 gm of Ancef® are available and when reconstituted have a final volume of 3 ml. How many milliliters of the reconstituted Ancef® should be withdrawn and placed in the D5W?

5) The recommended maintenance infusion dose for aminophylline (a medication given to a patients with breathing difficulties) for a patient is 0.5 mg/kg/h. Your pharmacy carries theophylline 400 mg in 500 mL D5W for infusion. Aminophylline is 79% theophylline (the rest of the salt is inactive). Calculate the infusion rate in mL/h for a 150 lb patient.

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 :

the weight of patient = 185 lb = 83.9146 kg

The infusion rate will be = 2.5 x 83.9146 = 209.7865 mg/min

Now since 209.7865 mg of dose can be administered per min , i.e. 60 seconds

The duration of infusion for a 0.75 mg dose will be :

= (0.75 x 60) / 209.7865

= 0.21 s

So the duration of infusion will be 0.21 seconds
