Question

(Physics 3) / Polarization

**Initially vertically polarized light with an intensity of 43 W/m^2 is incident on a polarizer which is rotated at an angle of 20 degrees from the horizontal. After it passes through a second polazirer which is rotated at an angle of 60 degrees from the vertical. What is the intensity of the resulting light after it passes through both polarizers?

Thank You

Should I use the angle of 70 or 20 degrees after it passes the first polarizer and what angle should i use for the second polarizer ?? Please Explain :'(

Explanation / Answer

for the first Polarizer , we take the angle Polarizer makes with the direction of polarized light in vertical. since polarizer makes 20 degrees with horizontal , angle with vertical will be 90 -20 = 70.

after passing the first polarizer , light is making angle 70 with vertical.

second Polarizer makes angle 60 with vertical

so angle between the axis of light from first polarizer and second polarizer = 70 - 60 = 10
