Question

For the system of capacitors shown in the figure below, find the following. (Let

C1 = 9.00 ?F

and

C2 = 4.00 ?F.)

(a) the equivalent capacitance of the system
?F

(b) the charge on each capacitor

(c) the potential difference across each capacitor

on C1     ?C on C2     ?C on the 6.00 ?F capacitor     ?C on the 2.00 ?F capacitor     ?C For the system of capacitors shown in the figure below, find the following. (Let C1 = 9.00 ?F and C2 = 4.00 ?F.) a) the equivalent capacitance of the system ?F (b) the charge on each capacitor (c) the potential difference across each capacitor

Explanation / Answer

C1 and 6 uF are in series ....net capaciatnce of these two is C12 = (9*6)/(9+6)= 3.6 uF

C2 and 2 uF are also in series

C34 = (4*2)/(4+2) = 1.33 uF

3.6 uF are 1.33 uF are in parallel

Cnet = 3.6+1.33 = 4.93 uF

charge on C1 = charge 6 uF = Q1 = C12*V = 3.6*90 = 324 uC

charge on C2 = Charge on 2uF = Q2= C34*V = 1.33*90 = 119.7 uC

C) potential differenc across C1 = V1 = Q1/C1 = 324*10^-6/(9*10^-6)= 36 V

across C2 = V2 = Q2/C2 = 119.7/4 = 29.925 V

across 6 uF is 90-36 = 54 V

across 2 uF is 90-29.925 = 60.075 V
