(b) What is the kinetic energy of each proton (in units of MeV) in the laboratory reference frame? Answer given is 5640MeV.

(c) What is the kinetic energy of one of the colliding protons (in units of MeV) in the rest frame of the other proton? Answer given is 91500MeV.

Part A)

From relativistic velocity addition...

u = .9898c

u' = -.9898c

v = ?

v = u-u'/(1 - uu'/c2)

v = (.9898c - (-.9898c)/(1 - (.9898)(-.9898))

v = .99995c

Part B)

KE = mc2 - moc2

m = mo/sqrt(1 - v2/c2)

m = (1.67 X 10-27)/sqrt(1 - .98982)

m = 1.1722 X 10-26 kg

KE = (1.17 X 10-26)(3 X 108)2 - (1.67 X 10-27)(3 X 108)2

KE = 9.03 X 10-10 J

Convert to MeV by dividing by 1.6 X 10-13

KE = 5640 MeV

Part C)

KE = mc2 - moc2

m = mo/sqrt(1 - v2/c2)

m = (1.67 X 10-27)/sqrt(1 - .99992)

m = 1.6434 X 10-25 kg
