PCOS poly cystic ovarian syndrome.
It is a condition occurring in women that prevents the ovaries from producing egg. Common symptoms are irregular periods, infertility or reduced fertility, weight loss problems and acne.
PCOS is usually said to be related to abnormal hormonal levels or hereditary. Excess weight is also one the contributory factors that increases the risk of hormonal imbalances and decreased ovulation.
Other very common symptoms are: irregular periods, thinning hair, acne, excess body hair (hirsutism), miscarriages, weight gain. It carries an increased risk of developing health problems later in life, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, mood swings, and high cholesterol and depression.
PCOS is usually managed by hormonal treatment, Anti diabetes medicine or surgery.
Specific dietary needs
In PCOS condition women often have higher insulin levels. High level insulin may cause the ovaries to produce more androgens (testosterone). This often makes it harder for women to lose weight.
Hence it is recommended to avoid refined carbohydrates or sugary foods that increase risk of insulin resistance and weight loss.
Excess weight, hirsutism and type 2 diabetes are common associated conditions that may occur later in life.
