Question

You have been hired to design a spring-launched roller coaster that will carry two passengers per car. The car goes up a 13-m-high hill, then descends 20m to the track's lowest point. You've determined that the spring can be compressed a maximum of 2.1m and that a loaded car will have a maximum mass of 400kg . For safety reasons, the spring constant should be 12% larger than the minimum needed for the car to just make it over the top.

A) What is the maximum speed of a 360kg car if the spring is compressed the full amount?

Explanation / Answer

When it is moving up it ll ve potential energy

PE = mgh = 400*9.8*13 = 50960N

Amount of Energy Lost ll be = 0.12*50960 =6115.2J

HeNce total PE = 50960 + 6115.2 = 57075.2 J

When it is moving UP the hill it ll be losing some energy and gaining while moving down hence

PE net = mgh = 360*9.8*(20-13) = 24696 N

Net Energy = KE + PE

0.5 *m * v^2 = (57075.2+ 24696)

0.5 * 360 * v^2 = (57075.2+ 24696)

velocity = 21.31 m/sec
