Question

Two boxes of fruit on a frictionless horizontal surface are connected by a light string as in the figure below, where m1 = 15 kg and m2 = 22 kg. A force of F = 62 N is applied to the 22-kg block. (a) Determine the acceleration of each block and the tension in the string. acceleration of m1 Correct: Your answer is correct. m/s2 acceleration of m2 Correct: Your answer is correct. m/s2 tension in the string Correct: Your answer is correct. N (b) Repeat the problem for the case where the coefficient of kinetic friction between each block and the surface is 0.10. acceleration of m1 Changed: Your submitted answer was incorrect. Your current answer has not been submitted. The response you submitted has the wrong sign. m/s2 acceleration of m2 Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect. Did you accidentally divide or take the inverse in your calculation? m/s2 tension in the string Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect. Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Explanation / Answer

I see you have part A correct, so here is part B

For the first block. F - Ff -T= ma

62 - .1(22)(9.8) - T = 22(a)

40.44 - T = 22a

T = 40.44 - 22a

For the second block

T - Ff = ma

T - umg = ma

T - .1(15)(9.8) = 15(a)

T = 14.7 + 15a

Set the T's equal

40.44 - 22a = 14.7 + 15a

25.74 = 37a

a = .696 m/s2

T = 40.44 - 22(.696)

T = 25.1 N
