Question

1) A mechanic is fixing an old car. He struggles to remove on of the large screws. To remove the screw he must apply a larger torque. Assuming that he has a full set of hand tools available, how should he select his tool to be able to apply a larger torque? Explain your answer.

2)If one could repeat the same experiment in the lab located on the Moon (different weight of the measured objects), then would the density result be different? If yes, then explain how much different. If not, then why the result would be the same?

Explanation / Answer

1) for opening a screw the mechanic would select such a wrench on which he has to apply minimum force and he gets maximum torque . so for this he must select the tool which has long handle and whose mouth fits well into the screw.

so the tool which has largest handle will provide largest torque generally we use a screw(simple machine type)to open nuts by rotating.so a larger handle will provide larger torque because TORQUE=DISTANCE*FORCE APPLIED .

2) on moon only the accleration due to gravity changes(becomes 1/6 approx as compared in earth) .

so it is the weight that changes not the mass.

and density=mass/volume

so on moon both mass and volume are same as compared on earth so density in moon is same as density on earth.
