Question
30 **please only answer this question if you have experience in epidemiology**In Chicago in 1995, extreme heat was responsible for hundreds of deaths in that city. Epidemiologists made the following two observations around that heat event.
1. The total number of women who died was greater than the total number of men who died.
2. Blacks had significantly higher age-adjusted death rates than Latinos, even though the poverty levels of the two groups were similar.
What might explain these two findings?
Explanation / Answer
1. it could be totally unrelated, such as the correlation between eating ice cream and drowning (the thing is more people eat ice cream in the summer and more people swim as well, which explains the drownings.) It might also have something to do with where women and men are during the day; are men driving during the day or are women? who is outside more? etc. 2. this could be due to several things the prevalence of blacks vs. Latinos in Chicago. if there are a greater number of blacks living in Chicago, the death rates could seem higher. also, how could this relate to gang violence? studies have shown that when the temperature rises, people are more likely to kill each other. Does this help?
