Question
Need Help With Method:
Two converging lenses with f1 = 21 cm and f2 = 32 cm are located
1.50 m apart as shown in the figure below. An object is placed 49 cm in front of the lens on the left.
A) Find the location and size of the image produced by the first lens
Answers: distance= 36.8cm, location= to the right of the lens, magnification= -0.75
B) Where is the image produced by the second lens?
Answers: distance= 44.6cm, location= to the right of the lens
C) What is overall magnification of the final image
Answer: magnification= 0.295
Explanation / Answer
A) u1 = 49 cm
1/u1 + 1/v1 = 1/f1
1/v1 = 1/f1 - 1/u1
1/v1 = 1/21 - 1/49
v1 = 36.75 cm
m1 = -v1/u1 = -36.75/49 = -0.75
B)
u2 = 150 - 36.75 = 113.25 cm
1/u2 + 1/v2 = 1/f2
1/v2 = 1/f2 - 1/u2
1/v2 = 1/32 - 1/113.25
v2 = 44.6 cm
m2 = -v2/u2 = -44.6/113.25 = -0.394
C) overallmagnification, M = m1*m2
= -0.75*(-0.394)
= 0.2954
