Question

The potential difference between points and is 12 V.

The The figure to the right shows a uniform (constant) electric field between oppositely charged plates, as seen from the side. The potential difference Vba between points a and b is 12 V. If the distance between points a and b is 8.0 cm, and the distance between points b and c is 5.0 cm, what is the potential difference Vca between points a and c? An electron initially at rest is accelerated from point a to point b by a potential difference Vba. How much greater would be its final speed be if it were accelerated from point a to point b by twice as much voltage? Hint: The work-energy principle may be handy here.

Explanation / Answer

since same distance across plates 12 V and bc distance is perp to field

b) W = dPE
1/2 mv^2 = e V

so double V will double v

so v would be sqrt(2) = 0.707 as big
