Question
Near the surface of the Earth there is an electric field of about 150 V/m which points downward. Two identical balls with mass m = 0.580kg are dropped from a height of 2.10m , but one of the balls is positively charged with q1 = 700 microC , and the second is negatively charged with q2 = -700 microC .
Use conservation of energy to determine the difference in the speed of the two balls when they hit the ground. (Neglect air resistance.)
Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Explain as you go!!! thanks!
Explanation / Answer
for +ve charged ball
total work done=change in kinetic energy
Eqh+mgh=0.5mv2
150*700*10-6*2.10+0.58*9.81*2.10=0.5*0.58*v2
v=6.4778m/s
for -ve charged ball
total work done=change in kinetic energy
Eqh+mgh=0.5mv2
-150*700*10-6*2.10+0.58*9.81*2.10=0.5*0.58*v2
v=6.359m/s
