Explanation / Answer

Cultural competence is developing an awareness of ones own existence ,sensations, thoughts and environment without letting it have an undue influence on those of other backgrounds. The ability to provide cultural competent care is especially important for critical care nurses who function in high stress environments in hospitals.Critical care nurses must develop cultural care competency to be effective in establishing rapport with patients and to accurately assess ,develop and implement nursing interventions to design to meet patients needs. As patients advocates critical care nurses are required to support decisions made by patient or patient families that may reflect a cultural perspective that conflicts with mainstream healthcare practices.Culturally comptetent care cannot be offered until or unless nurses have a clear understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Awareness of the rules of interactions with a specific cultural group such as communication patterns and customs, division of rules in the family unit, spirituality will help in better understanding the attitudes of the patients.Additionally become aware of own attitudes and tendencies to stereotype with regard to different cultural groups allows nurses to provide genuine care and concern.Developing skills helps in increasing cultural competency like for example it can involve assisting non english speaking patients with a translator or changing the phrases and words you use when explaining care.It also involves learning to adapt to new and different situations in a flexible way.So to become a cultural competent nurse:
