Question
A man is standing on a scale inside an elevator. As the elevator starts to go up with an acceleration a, the scale reads 836 N. The mass of the man is m = 70 kg.
(a) Which of the free body diagrams below displays all the forces acting on the man with the correct relative magnitudes and directions?
**** im having trouble uploading the image. please draw a free body diagram. the options I have are
1) a vertical line with a small vector on top(N) and a large vector on bottom(W)
2)a vertical line with two equal vectors (N)(W)
3) a vertical line with a large vector on top(N) and small vector on bottom(W)
4) two verical vectors upwards (N) and (ma). one downwards (W)
(b) Determine the acceleration of the elevator.
Explanation / Answer
actual reaing should be = 70*9.8 = 686N
but due to lift acceleration the force is 836N
so 70*x = 836
X = 11.94 m/sec^2
this is the effective accleration
X = 9.8 + lift acceleration
lift accleratin = 2.14 m/sec^2
option D is correct as the effective weight equal to normal reaction (N)(832N) is greater than actual weight(597.8)
yes
