Question
1200-kg car pushes a 2100-kg truck that has a dead battery to the right. When the driver steps on the accelerator, the drive wheels of the car push against the ground with a force of 4500 N . What is the magnitude of the force the car applies to the truck ?
b. Sort the following forces as relevant or not relevant to this situation. The symbols are defined as follows: normal force = n? , tension force = T? , horizontal force of the road on the car = F? rc, horizontal force of the road on the truck = F? rt, weight = w? , force of the car pushing on the truck = F? ct, and force of the truck pushing on the car = F? tc.
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
a) Total mass = 1200 + 2100 = 3300 kg
=> Now the acceleration of both the car and truck will be same as the car is pushing the truck
=> a = 4500 / m
=> a = 4500 / 3300
=> a = 1.3636 m/s^2 (approx)
Now force that car applies on the truck = mass of the truck * acceleration
=> Fct = 2100 * 1.3636
=> Fct = 2863.64 N (approx)
b) Relevant forces => horizontal force of the road on the car Frc , Horizontal force of the road on the truck(Frt) , Force of the car pushing on the truck= Fct , force of the truck pushing on the car = Ftc
Irrelevant forces => Normal force , Tension (T) , Weight (W)
