Question
Three charges, each of magnitude 6 nC, are at separate corners of a square of edge length 5 cm. The two charges at opposite corners are positive, and the other charge is negative. Find the force exerted by these charges on a fourth charge q = +3 nC at the remaining (upper right) corner. (Assume the +x axis is directed to the right and the +y axis is directed upward.)
I get 6.24395E-5 i N and 6.24395E-5 j N, WEbassign says it's the wrong answer, What could I have done wrong?
I set up one +Q top left, another +Q Bottom Right and the -Q bottom left
Explanation / Answer
r^2 = x^2+x^2 = 50*10^-4
Fx = k*Q*q/x^2 - k*Q*q*cos60/r^2
Fx = k*Q*q/25*10^-4 - k*Q*q*0.5/50*10^-4 = 1.5*K*Q*q*10^4
Fx = 243*10-5 N
Fy = k*Q*q/x^2 - k*Q*q*sin60/r^2
Fy = k*Q*q/25*10^-4 - k*Q*q*0.87/50*10^-4 = 1.5*K*Q*q*10^4
Fy = 183.06*10-5 N
F = sqrt(Fx^2Fy^2) = 304.23*10^-5 N
