Question

The graph shows the potential
energy and the total energy of a 250 g mass oscillating on a spring.

a. Where is the mass when the spring is unstretched?
b. Where is the mass when it changes direction? How did you figure this out?
c. What is the maximum kinetic energy of the mass?
d. What is the maximum
velocity of the mass?

How did you figure this out? c. What is the maximum kinetic energy of the mass? d. What is the maximum velocity of the mass?

Explanation / Answer

a) when unstretched, x = 0

b) changes direction when PE = E
so at -10 cm and 10 cm

c) max KE when PE = 0

so E = PE + KE

KE = 8 J

d)

1/2 mv^2 = 8

0.5*.25*v^2=8

v= 8 m/s
