Question
In this video a 12 year old girl, Briana, is struggling with morbid obesity. She weighs over 300 pounds. She has been told that being this overweight will affect her health. She also feels very self-conscious about her weight and is bullied by her classmates. Briana's parents express concern about her health as well. When her mother is interviewed about what food she serves the family she appears to be very interested in making any necessary changes. A trip to the market to find out what she purchases for family meals reveals that she does not seem to know what would be best to prepare for Briana so she can lose weight. Briana's mother appears to be "stuck" on buying what she thinks are healthy foods which includes canned vegetables and very little fresh fruit and vegetables. Discuss what you would include in a client teaching tool/plan of care for Briana. Also include what instructions you would give her mother about preparing meals for Briana. When describing your nutrition nursing interventions, list two evidence based guidelines/resources that support your tool/plan/instructions.
Explanation / Answer
Briana's mother must be provided with patient education regarding the causes of obesity, the actual calorie and nutritional requirements of Barana's age. Educating about the energy provided by each food type (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and their role in our body helps her to understand the importance of balanced diet. She must be encouraged to provide fresh food to her family members than the canned foods.
The following are the interventions to improve the nutrition and weight status objectives for healthy people 2020:
1). Changing the lifestyle and counseling. This is because the sedentary lifestyle is one of the important causes of obesity.
2). Taking more nutritious food with the possible low calories. Eating junk food adds more calories and less nutrition. People must be aware of nutrition benefits of foods they are eating. Providing the charts of foods, their nutrients and calories can help in making people more cautious.
3). Regular physical exercise. It would greatly help in reducing the excess fat, regularizing the secretion of insulin and the other metabolic and digestive processes.
