Question
consider the system of massless pulley and masses shown in the diagram . If the coefficient of static and kinetic friction on mass 1 ( 2.00 kg ) is 0.600 and 0.140 respectively ,
a- What is the maximum value of mass 2 that would allow the system to stay in equilibrium ?
b- If mass 2 is 5.00 kg , Find the acceleration of each of the masses ?

a) sum forces
m g - friction = (m + M) a
since not moving a = 0
m g - u M g = 0
m = u M = 0.6*2 = 1.2 kg
b)
now nonzero
so mg - u M g = (m + M)a
5*9.81 - 0.14*2*9.81=(2+5)*a
a=6.6 m/s^2
