Question

In the following figure, let C1 = 1.40 microF, C2 = 5.80 microF and Vab = +46.0 V.

(a) Calculate the charge on each capacitor.

Q1= __________ C

Q2= __________ C

(b) Calculate the potential difference across each capacitor.

V1= __________ V

V2= __________ V

In the following figure, let C1 = 1.40 microF, C2 = 5.80 microF and Vab = +46.0 V. (a) Calculate the charge on each capacitor. Q1= __________ C Q2= __________ C (b) Calculate the potential difference across each capacitor. V1= __________ V V2= __________ V

Explanation / Answer

(a) find total C :

C = C1C2 / (C1+C2) = 1.128 uF

so Q total = Ctot x Vab = 1.128 uF x 46 = 51.88 uC

so Q1 = Q2 = 51.88 uC

_______________________________________

(b) hence ,

V1 = Q1 / C1 = 51.88 / 1.4 = 37.05 V

V2 = 51.88 / 5.8 = 8.95 V
