3. You are back-stage at (insert your favorite artist here)'s concert and overhear some roadies talking about how they mixed up two of the tuning forks (your favorite artist is really old school) and now can't figure out which is which. Deciding to help them keep their jobs, you find some tubing lying around and quickly put together a 40-cm-long tube with a 40-cm-long insert. With one of the tuning forks vibrating, you slowly pull the insert out of the main tube and notice that standing waves are created inside the tube contraption when the total length is 42.5 cm, 57.5 cm, and 72.5 cm. What is the frequency of the tuning fork in question?Explanation / Answer
For all the 3 cases the overlapping lengths are 7.5, 22.5 and 37.5 cm respectively. considering the 7.5 is the smallest length this corresponds to standing waves formation at x, 3x and 5x respectively. So since the series is odd, this length is 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 times the wavelength. so 7.5 cm is half the wavelength
Hence the wavelength is 15 cm
we know that wavelength*frequency is equal to speed of sound in air
so frequency is 340/(0.15) = 2266 Hz = 2.26 KHz
