Question

A 6 kg-object moving in the + x-direction at 6.5 m/s collides head-on with an 8 kg-object moving in the - x direction at 4.0 m/s. Determine the final velocity of each object if (a) the 6 kg-object is at rest after the collision, (b) the 8 kg-object is at rest after the collision, (c) the collision is totally inelastic, and (d) the collision is elastic. Explanation / Answer

a)

conserver momentum

initial momentum of the system = final momentum of the system

6 * 6.5 - 8*4 = 6 * 0 + 8* V

V = 0.875 m/s

b)

6 * 6.5 - 8*4 = 6 * V + 8* 0

V = 1.17 m/s

c)

collision is in elastic => their velocity is same after the collision

6 * 6.5 - 8*4 = (6 + 8 )* V

V = .5 m/s

both will have same velocity V

d)

coefficient of restitution = 1

6.5 - (-4) = V2 - V1

6 * 6.5 - 8*4 = 6 * V1 + 8* V2

6 V1 + 8 V2 = 7

V2 - V1 = 10.5

V1 = - 6.5 m/s

V2 = 5 m/s
