Question
You are given the circuit shown in the diagram. You are told that a current does flow through the diode. Consider the situation when Vo = 10V, R1 = 10 k?, R2 = R3 = 20 k?.
a) If the diode is ideal (no voltage drop when current flows), what is the potential at points A and B, and how much current flows through the diode?
b) Repeat part a), but now assume the voltage drop across the diode is 0.65 V as current flows through the diode.

(a) Equivalent resistance becomes R1+(R2 || R3)
= 10k + 20k/2 =20k
Current=V/R = 10/20k =0.5mA
Potential at A= Potential at B(Since diode is ideal) =10 - (0.5mA*10k) = 5V
(b) Applying KVL in loop 1, 10 - I(10k) - I1(20k)=0
Applying KVL in loop 2, I1(20k) - 0.65 - (I - I1)(20k) = 0
Solving we get I = 0.48mA , I1=0.26mA
Hence potential at A = 10 - (0.48mA*10k) = 5.2V
potential at B = 5.2V - 0.65V = 4.55V
