EXAMEN 3 FISI-3171 STUDENT ID# '802-13-gga3 Name: Boom E. Aeant (You have to present all necessary steps in order to get the full points) 1. [20 points] 120-kg astronaut (including space suit) acquires a speed of 0.5 m/s by pushing off with his A from a 1700-kg space capsule. space capsule? use (a) What is the change in speed of the each on the other? As the reference frame, (b) If the push lasts 0.500 s, what is the average force exerted by the position of the capsule before the push. the push? (c) What is the kinetic energy of each after mv MV 239

Explanation / Answer

(a) By conservation of momentum,

MV+mv = 0; where M & V: Mass and velocity of capsule, m&v: mass and velocity of the astronaut

1700*V = 120*0.5

V = 60/1700 = 0.0353 m/s

(b) During the push with respect to the initial position of the capsule can be seen by taking the change in momentum of the astronaut or the capsule (which is 60 kg m/s each) and dividing it by time i.e. 0.5 seconds which gives an average force of 120 N.

(c) Kinetic energy

of the astronaut = 0.5*120*0.52 = 15 Joules

of the capsule = 0.5*1700*0.03532 = 1.06 Joules
