Question

The graph below shows the time variation of momentum for a 5.00 kg object moving in a straight line and subjected to a constant retarding force. During this time the object undergoes a collision. (a) What is the speed of the object at time t=3.0 s? (b) Determine the magnitude of the retarding force acting on the 5.00 kg object at time t=3.0 s. (c) At t=6.0 s, the 5.00 kg mass collides head on with a stationary 2.00 kg mass. The two masses move off in the same straight line. What is the speed of the 2.00 kg mass immediately after the collision?

Explanation / Answer

a) at time t=3 sec, momentum= 12.therefore velocity will be 12/5=2.4 m/s

b) the rate of change of momentum is force acting on the body.the force will be 1N

c) momentum is conserved.so the change in the momentum of 5kg mass will be transfered into 2 kg mass

9-6=3=2*v

velocity=1.5 m/s
