Question

Estimate the frequency of the sound of the ocean when you put your ear very near a 13cm diameter sea shell. The speed of sound in air is 343m/s.
Note- I got 1.3, 2.6, 1319,1.3x10^2 and 1.3 x 10^3 and they were all wrong so your answer shouldn't be any of these. Estimate the frequency of the sound of the ocean when you put your ear very near a 13cm diameter sea shell. The speed of sound in air is 343m/s.

Explanation / Answer

assuming the seashell is open at both ends,

for funamental frequency

lambda/2 = 13 cm

lambda = 26 cm

hence the required frequency is

f = v / lamda

= 343 / 0.26 m = 1319.23 Hz
